Amigurumi Dummy Charms

Dummy Charms

Get to grips with amigurumi and stitch up these fun dummy holders

Made from only a small amount of yarn, these dummy holders are perfect for novices looking to try a new technique. Amigurumi isn't as difficult as it first might seem, so follow Irene Strange's simple steps as she shows us exactly how to tackle the technique.

Stitches used:

Chain (ch)

Double crochet (dc)

Double crochet two together (dc2tog)

Magic ring

Slip stitch (sl st)

Half treble (htr)

Base

Using 5mm hook and pink, lilac or blue yarn make 31ch.

NOTE add extra chains if you want a longer strap

Row 1: starting in second ch from hook1dc in each st. 30 sts

Row 2: turn, 1ch, 1dc in each of next 12 sts. 12 sts

Make a loop by connecting beg of Row 1 to last st of Row 2, with sl st

Row 3: turn, 1ch, 1dc in each of next 12 sts

Fasten off

Using 5mm hook and same colour yarn as strap use magic loop method to form a loop and work 6dc into this. Six sts

Rnd 1: work 2dc into each st. 12 sts

Rnd 2: (1dc in first st, 2dc in next st) six times. 18 sts

Rnd 3: (1dc in first two st, 2dc into next st) six times. 24 sts

Rnd 4: 1dc into each st

Rnd 5: (1dc in first two sts, dc2tog) six times. 18 sts

Rnd 6: (1dc in first st, dc2tog) six times. 12 sts Stuff firmly

Rnd 7: (dc2tog) six times. Six sts

Fasten off, sew up opening

to make up



Sew head to lower edge of strap (furthest from loop), hiding any loose threads inside stuffing

To get an even edge, put your hook through both top loops of the chain stitch when working the first row

Floral Garland

Master doubles and trebles by crocheting this beautiful

If you're looking to add a touch of springtime to your living room, try making Karen Wiederhold's pretty floral garland. You can create this lovely array of flowers in any length you so desire. The finished product looks great adorning the ceilings of greenhouses, kitchens and bedrooms too. It's also a fantastic way to practise basic crochet techniques.

Stitches used:

Chain (ch)

Slip stitch (sl st)

Double crochet (dc)

Treble (tr)

Note: as you work this piece it will take on a bowl shape with your thumb on the inside. Once piece is completed, it should be turned inside out Using 5.5mm hook and green yarn make 5ch, join with sl st to form ring

Rnd 1: 3ch, 11tr into ring, join with sl st. 12 tr

Rnd 2: 3ch, 1tr into each sp between each dc, sl st into first space to join. 12 tr Change to blue yarn

Rnd 3: rep Rnd 2

Rnd 4: 3ch, 1tr into same sp, 2tr into each sp

Rnd 5: 2ch, 5tr into same sp, (sl st into next two sps, 6tr into next sp) seven times, sl st into last two sps.

Rnd 1: 3ch, 11tr into ring, join with sl st

Rnd 2: (8ch, sl st into same sp, sl st into next two sps) five times, 8ch, sl st into same sp, sl st into next sp, tie off.

Six loops

Change to orange yarn

Rnd 3: (2ch, 9tr, sl st into same loop, sl st into st between loops, sl st into next loop) six times, sl st into first loop

Fasten off

Using 5.5mm hook and green yarn make 9ch

Row 1: * 1dc into second ch from hook, dc into next ch, 1tr into each of next four ch **, 6tr into last ch, turn to work along opposite side of ch, working from * to ** in reverse order to give mirror image

Using 5.5mm hook and yellow yarn make 20ch, add Candyfloss Flower by crocheting through sp in centre top of petal, 20ch, attach Bell Flower, rep until desired length. Attach yarn to leaf, 10ch, attach to centre of ch space between flowers. Rep for each leaf. Sew leaves to either end of garland string. Block by pinning Candyfloss flowers and leaves flat, spray lightly with spray starch (see How to), allow to dry

The garland can be made longer and more varied by making flowers like the ones designed for the corsages on page 36 and combining them with the original garland

Enjoy your chunky yarn and practise working double with the DK to create a fun 2-in-1

The scarf has had a revamp in recent times with the introduction of snoods, hoods and neckwarmers hitting the high street. This cowel neck is our interpretation of this trend and can even be turned into a funky hat too! It's a great beginner's project that will knit up quickly. Perfect for winter, after all who wants to faff about with long scarf tails when you can have a neckwarmer instead!

Stitches used:

Knit (k)

Purl (p)

Yarn forward (yfwd)

Knit two together (k2tog)

Row 1: [p2, k2] to last two sts, p2.

Row 2: [k2, p2] to last two sts, k2.

Row 3: [p2, k2] to last two sts, p2.

Rep Rows 2-3 once more; do not cut yarn but join in purple (used double).

Using purple, rep Rows 2-3; do not cut yarn but join in white.

Using white, rep Rows 2-3; do not cut yarn but join in green (used double).

Using green, rep Rows 2-3; do not cut yarn but pick up blue.

Cont in this way, working two-row stripes in rib pattern, beginning with two rows in blue then changing colours as folls:

(Purple, white, green, blue) twice, then purple, white, green.

Next row (eyelets): Using purple (double), k1, [yfwd, k2tog] rep to last st, k1.

Next row: [p2, k2] to last two sts, p2.

Work two more tworow stripes, as before, using white then green.

Cast off in rib. making up

Use blue yarn to make a plait at least 60cm in length; knot the ends, then thread the plait through the eyelet holes.

Use purple and green yarn to make pompoms and stitch one to each end of the plaited cord.

To transform the neck warmer into a hat, pull up the plaited cord to gather the top of the tube, and tie in a bow. Turn up the first few rows of ribbing at the base of the tube to form a brim.

hot tip

Carry unused yarns along side of work where possible, twisting yarns after every two rows
