Putting pen to paper and starting a story can seem daunting but it’s actually not scary at all. The word limit is 500-1000 words, which is just a page or two of A4 – not so daunting after all, right? Just choose a sentence below to get started.

She picked up her favourite yarn and spotted something strange on the shelf – once she looked closer she couldn’t believe her eyes and she stood frozen in shock...

They followed the trail of yarn into the abandoned house, not knowing that what lurked inside would change their lives forever...

Ben had been planning this for ages and he knew if he hid her present in the craft room, she would never suspect a thing...

The only rule here is to keep it crafty, and there’s no need to choose an opening sentence from our list above. It can be in any poetry style you like, so whether you’re a pro at Shakespearean sonnets, love a haiku or want to create an air of mystery with a riddle, we welcome them all.

I’d recommend that you make a plan first – jot down a few ideas to help guide you and let your pen flow from there.

Imagine the person you are talking to. It makes it so much easier to include all of the detail they would want to know and really makes the story come alive.
